15th Annual Pottery Studio Tour
MN Potters of the Upper St. Croix River
The Potters of the Upper Saint Croix River Valley Studio Tour invite you to visit all six pottery studios during the 15th annual tour weekend. You will be welcomed by the potters to their unique, rural workshops and you can meet twenty-two guest potters invited especially for this event. These special guests will present their work for sale alongside the newest work of each host potter.
Using our map, you can drive through the spring landscape of the Saint Croix River Valley. At each studio you will find useful and distinctive pottery. Visit one, or all of the studios during this two-day, self-guided event. Bring friends to share the day with you.
These Minnesota potters have earned a national reputation for quality and integrity. Each potter’s work has a distinct character, is durable and intended for everyday use. From small cups and bowls to large pieces suitable for display, an intriguing range of pottery will be available. You will find earthenware, stoneware, and porcelain for use in cooking and serving, decorating and display. The guest artists are distinguished potters who will personally present their work for sale. This is an opportunity to see a substantial body of work and to meet and talk with these visiting artists. They are coming from nine states, as far as North Carolina, Virginia, Idaho, Nebraska, West Virginia, Massachusetts, Pennsylvannia, Washington DC, Oregon, and as near as Wisconsin, and other parts of Minnesota. Their work is, in turn: handsome, playful, stunning, contemplative, precious, functional, colorful and subtle.
At every studio you will find the potters themselves welcoming you. Along the way you may find trillium blossoms carpeting the woodlands and warblers exuberantly greeting the spring. Rain or shine, this springtime event is anticipated by all who enjoy handmade pottery.
All the pottery studios are within a one-hour drive of Minneapolis and Saint Paul, Minnesota, located near Hwy. 95 from north of Stillwater to Harris.
Maps are available on this web site, at each studio and at:
Continental Clay Company at I-35W at Stinson Boulevard, Minneapolis, Minnesota and Northern Clay Center at 2424 Franklin Avenue East, Minneapolis, Minnesota.
As a way of saying “thank you” for the enthusiastic support we experienc with this event, a portion of the proceeds each year is donated to a selection of recipients. In 2006, a helpful sum was donated to the North Branch Middle School Art Department. In 2007 we will give to a school in the Chisago Lakes Schools district. In the past, support has been given to the Weisman Art Museum, the U of M, Northern Clay Center, Rochester Arts Center, Potters For Peace, and the Craft Emergency Relief Fund (CERF).

Crossing Borders Studio tour
Email Contact Crossing Borders
The concept of the Crossing Borders Studio Tour started as a conversation between Fritz Lehmberg and Dick Cooter around the time of their joint show, Same Road, Different Views. The concept was to create a studio tour that would allow buyers to learn about the experience of making art within the environment the creative work takes place. The tour would also help build community among North Shore artists.
Fritz and Dick invited other area artists to participate in the tour, including Michael Tonder and Jody Freij-Tonder. Michael and Jody had experience with studio tours in Red Wing, and had visited the St. Croix Valley Potter's Tour in previous years.
Together, they invited artists they knew: Lee and Dan Ross, Dave Yungner in Minnesota, and Damon Dowbak in Thunder Bay. The group gathered in the spring of 1996 to plan for the tour. Lee came up with the "Crossing Borders" name, and the first Crossing Borders Studio Tour took place in the fall of 1996.
The first year of the tour, six studios and nine individual artists participated and sales managed to just cover expenses. Dick Cooter claimed he was surprised anyone came.
Through the years most of the core group of artists participating in the tour remain. Other artists have joined in the tour and some have dropped out, but sales and visitors have steadily risen.
The group is careful with change. All major decisions are discussed and, unless consensus is reached, no action is taken. Buyer education remains a vital part of the Crossing Borders experience, and only full-time working artists are involved.
In 2005 the group experimented by inviting a visiting artist to participate in the tour at one studio. The experiment was a success, so this, the tenth year of the tour, seven visiting artists have been invited to show their work.
Please join us as we celebrate and continue the tradition of art, education and community along the North Shore at the Crossing Borders Studio Tour.
