The outdoor recreationalist or those just looking to get away for awhile can enjoy a number of hiking possibilities in the County. In addition to 88,000 plus acres of public lands, trails include, the Blue Hills Trail System, Blue Hills Nature Trail, Hunter Walking Trails, Sisters Farm trails, or Ladysmith City Park trails in Greenwood Park and Riverside park.

Blue Hills in Northwest Rusk County or The Blue Hills Trail System, known better for its first class winter cross-country skiing, is also an excellent area for biking and hiking. The West side of the trail system is open and suitable for mountain biking. Approximately 10+ miles of biking is available over the rolling terrain. Trail Length: 12.0 miles. Level: Easy to difficult

1 mile South of Ladysmith on Highway 27 Former Mine Site has been reclaimed and 5 miles of trails now traverse the sight. Excellent for wildlife watching, birds and insects. Relatively flat. Hiking in summer, skiing and snowshoeing in winter.

Hunter Walking Trails


Public lands. The Hunter-Walking trails, maintained by the Rusk County Forestry office, are located in the Blue Hills and on County Forest lands in Southern Rusk County. The trails are designed for game bird hunting, but are also utilized for recreational hiking. Maps are available at the Rusk County Visitors Center and at the Rusk County Forestry Office.

Southwest of Ladysmith. The Sisters Farm system provides opportunities for biking, hiking, and skiing. Bikers will find muli- and single track biking. The area also hosted the annual LogJam Mountain bike until 2001, which was part of the Wisconsin Off-Road Racing Series.

Murphy Flowage Picnic Area

Murphy Flowage Picnic Area is located across the road from the Murphy Campground and approximately 13 miles north of Weyerhauser, Wisconsin on County Hwy. F. The picnic area is open daily from 6am-l Opm. There is a log shelter which is available on a first serve basis and remember to clean up after you are done. Several picnic tables and barbeque grills are on site for park users. Restrooms are also provided.
Recreational Opportunites Nearby The Ice Age Trail is located nearby and the parking area at Murphy Flowage Picnic Area can be used for vehicle parking during a hike. The Rusk County ATV Trailhead is located nearby at Bucks Lake, just four miles east of Murphy on N. Bucks Lake Road.
